Lyte's robot-perception silicon pulls in $165M

Image © Lyte — The Sunnyvale firm — founded by ex-Apple and PrimeSense engineers behind Face ID and Kinect — builds custom silicon, multimodal sensors and spatial software that let robots sense position and motion directly rather than piecing them together in software. The Maverick Silicon-led Series C values Lyte at $1.6 billion post-money, with the cash earmarked to scale production of its LyteVision sensing stack, according to the company.

TPC Robotics lines up seven actuators for humanoid joints

HIGEN RNM takes aim at the humanoid actuator bottleneck

CEO Jae Hak Kim's pitch is that AI is making robot brains smarter while intelligence still meets the physical world at the joint – the full platform gets its showcase at CES 2027.

Allient shrinks its frameless torque motors to 25 mm

Allient has added 25 mm and 38 mm sizes to its ElectroFlux line of frameless torque motors, aimed at advanced robotics and other space-constrained precision motion designs, according to the company. PCB termination on the stator trims the motor's footprint and lets builders integrate the units directly into their own products.

Schaeffler readies formed gearboxes for 2027 mass production

Image © Schaeffler — Schaeffler has finished validating its formed strain wave gearboxes — key parts of the actuators that make up around half a humanoid's manufacturing cost, according to the company — and plans a mass-production rollout to robot makers from 2027, starting in Germany. Forming the parts instead of machining them cuts manufacturing costs by more than 25% and material use by more than 75%, says the firm, which has supplied over 2 million such gearboxes in the past decade, mostly in automotive.

Enactic's open-source OpenArm 02 arm hits production

Car-leather maker Unichem buys robot-skin firm Loomia

South Korea's Unichem, a leather supplier to the car industry since 1976, is paying about $6 million for Brooklyn-based Loomia, whose flexible electronic layers bond circuits to cloth and leather and give robot hands soft pressure sensing. The new owner is aiming squarely at humanoid skin: first engineering samples are due in January 2027, with Tesla, OpenAI, Boston Dynamics, 1X and Meta named as target customers, according to The Robot Report.

BioflexBot copies the hand's functions, not its shape

Researchers at CUHK-Shenzhen and Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology built a pneumatic hand that pinches, rotates, hooks and grasps with a coiled spring, a constraining shell and just two air inputs. Writing in Advanced Science, they say it out-rotates a human hand nearly fourfold and grasps objects up to 13 times larger than comparable systems can.

Stabilus and Synapticon pair up to mass-produce humanoid joints

Motion-control manufacturer Stabilus and drive-tech specialist Synapticon have formed a strategic partnership to jointly develop and build integrated actuators for humanoid robots, covering joints from the head and wrists down to the hips and knees. Small-series production starts at Stabilus plants in Europe in 2027, with large-scale output planned in North America from 2028 to sit close to major humanoid makers, according to the companies.

RoboSense goes fully solid-state with its E2 robot lidar

The Shenzhen lidar maker unveiled E2, a fully solid-state digital lidar built on its in-house SPAD-SoC that fits up to a 180-degree field of view behind just two exposed optical windows, aimed at humanoids, quadrupeds, drones and mowers, according to RoboSense. Two companion chipsets — Phoenix for long-range precision and Peacock for image-grade wide-angle 3D perception — debut alongside it, with the company counting AgiBot, Pudu Robotics and Geek+ among robotics partners already on its lidars.

Researchers at Queen Mary University of London and Italian partner universities built a fingertip whose synthetic skin shifts color as it deforms, letting an embedded camera map contact pressure and surface topology at 100-micrometer resolution with zero computational latency, according to the team. The mechanochromic design could give robot hands quantitative touch without packing electronics into the fingertip, though durability in real-world use is still unproven.
